Surf Expands Events-Based Partnership with Hyrox Globally

Dating app Surf is expanding its partnership with fitness racing brand Hyrox into the U.K., Ireland and Latin Americ. The expanded agreement will bring Surf to Hyrox events in São Paulo, Birmingham, Dublin, Rio de Janeiro and London this fall, extending a deal from July that already covers North America and Australia.

It will also take Surf’s “Blind First Dates” concept to international events, pairing singles who have never met to compete together in Hyrox doubles races.

The partnership is built around the idea that shared fitness interests can play a role in romantic compatibility. Surf users can add a Hyrox affiliation to their profiles and filter potential matches according to fitness interests and activities. The app uses a grid-style interface rather than a traditional swipe-based feed.

The Blind First Dates format takes that interest-based approach offline. Surf plans to host events in Rio de Janeiro in November and at London’s ExCeL in December, where matched participants will compete as doubles partners.

A Hyrox race involves eight one-kilometre runs combined with eight functional workout stations, making the format a more demanding first date than a conventional coffee or drinks meetup.

Surf said previous Blind First Dates at Hyrox events in New York and Miami generated more than 9 million organic social media views and received over 7,000 applications. The company also said 90% of surveyed participants were still communicating with their doubles partner or had gone on a second date one week after the event.

The expansion comes as dating startups increasingly target fitness and wellness communities as potential matchmaking niches, alongside many other in-person events that are likely to get singles meeting face to face. Surf has also pursued partnerships outside traditional dating environments, including with Palm Tree Music Festival and the World Surf League.
