TikTok Launches Micro-Drama Program with Sundance Institute

TikTok has partnered with the Sundance Institute to launch a micro-series writing program aimed at training creators in short-form episodic storytelling. The four-week online course focuses on scriptwriting for serialized narratives designed for digital audiences. Participants will be selected based on their existing TikTok content and interest in developing micro-dramas.

The program seeks to equip creators with tools, frameworks, and industry guidance for producing story-driven content in short episodes. It reflects TikTok’s efforts to build on the popularity of micro-dramas, which have gained significant traction with users. Industry reports indicate the format generated $1.3 billion in the US in 2025, primarily through direct viewer payments.

TikTok has already expanded its support for this content type by introducing a Minis section in the main app and launching a dedicated mini-dramas app called PineDrama in the US and Brazil earlier in 2026. The new training initiative aims to foster higher-quality serialized content and support emerging talent.

Applications for the program are open globally via the Sundance Collab website. The collaboration with Sundance Institute, known for nurturing new filmmakers, signals TikTok’s interest in professionalizing short-form narrative creation.

The development comes as platforms explore ways to sustain user engagement beyond standalone short videos. Micro-dramas offer a format that fits shorter attention spans while encouraging repeated viewing. Whether the program leads to notable new series remains to be seen, but Tinder is clearly pushing to deepen its role as an entertainment platform.
