Voice-First Dating App Reev Launches

A new voice-led dating app called Reev is entering the Australian market as Gen Z continues to move away from traditional swipe-based platforms. Founded by Macquarie University entrepreneur May Ku, Reev draws inspiration from Love is Blind and prioritizes conversation over photos.

Users create profiles using voice prompts rather than images. They can request five-minute phone calls or join live speed-dating rounds. Matches progress through gradual “intimacy stages” – from voice calls to messages, photos, and video – with both parties required to consent before unlocking the next level. The app also includes a “break-up note” feature that encourages constructive feedback instead of ghosting.

Reev addresses common complaints about mainstream dating apps. A 2025 Forbes survey found that 78% of dating app users, particularly Gen Z, report burnout due to ghosting, shallow interactions, and lack of genuine connections. This fatigue has contributed to declining performance at major players: Match Group’s Tinder lost hundreds of thousands of paying users in late 2025, while shares in both Match Group and Bumble have dropped significantly in recent years.

Early testing at Macquarie University has drawn positive feedback from students who say they prefer hearing someone’s voice and personality before seeing photos. The app is currently focused on Sydney, with plans for national expansion. It offers premium filters for $19.99 per month.

Reev joins a growing number of platforms attempting to rebuild trust in online dating through slower, more intentional formats. Whether voice-first approaches can achieve meaningful scale remains to be seen in a highly competitive market – especially one that’s driven so heavily by the wants and needs of the app users themselves.
