FROM THE WEB: ‘HowAboutWe’s Founders Redefine Online Dating – And What It Means to Be a CEO’ – Entrepreneur

How About We

Entrepreneur have an interview with HowAboutWe’s founders, who speak about the birth of the site, their business ethics and the similarities between being a CEO and a high school teacher.

Brian Patrick Eha interviews Aaron Schildkrout and Brian Schechter in their Manhattan offices to find the story behind one of the most innovative brands in the dating industry.

Rather than coming from a tech background, the two childhood friends worked as teachers in Boston and Washington, before leaving their jobs and travelling Europe to get “some real head space to think deeply about what’s happening with the internet.”

They came up with the idea of HowAboutWe after realising that the dating sphere was far too focussed on the online, and features such as “inauthentic poking, endless browsing through lookalike profiles”, rather than getting people out on dates.

The company now boasts 2.3m members for both their singles and couples service, and have recently made the move into media – launching a network of lifestyle titles.

The founders speak about their ethics as a company, what it means to be a CEO, and the importance of a happy workforce to a company’s success, Schildkrout saying:

“Your employees are spending the majority of this part of life working in your company, and we only have so long on this planet. So everyone’s experience of work should be transformational. It follows that your job as CEO is to make this the case.”
