Artist Turns Depressing Online Dating Experiences Into Amusing Art Project

An artist entering into the world of online dating for the first time has turned her experiences into an amusing new project about modern dating.

Recently out of a long-term relationship, Emmie Tsumura started dating online, finding the process tough and often depressing.

But before she packed it in, she decided to literally illustrate what online dating can be like, by drawing some humorous pictures of her matches, and the messages they sent.

She showed a few early drawings to her friends, who loved them, so decided to turn the idea into a full project.

Tsumura has since started Ok Cucumber, an Instagram account with over 150 online drawings of her dating app matches and the messages they sent her.

The description reads: “Pickup lines, illustrated. Fantasy online dating, crushing hard on communication misfires.”

The drawings are a humorous look at modern dating, but also a sad window into the experiences of many women on dating platforms, and the kind of strange and offensive messages they receive day in day out.
