Creative Threesome Produce Satirical Amazon Dating Site
A group of three have created Amazon Dating, a fake dating site, on which daters can ‘buy’ single people, in a parody of today’s online dating culture.
Suzy Shinn, Ani Acopian and Morgan Gruer joined up with animation company, Thinko, to produce the satirical site.
Acopian came up with the idea as a way to challenge traditional dating sites, which she compared to Postmates, an online grocery delivery company.
Acopian said to Refinery29: “It started basically because I made a joke that I wished I could Postmates a girlfriend. And then I was like, wait, why can’t I do that right now? Not actually, but you know — you can do that with everything else.”
On the site, shoppers can browse potential dates and ‘buy them’. Just like items on the official Amazon website, it includes reviews and drop-down menus to filter partner choice.
The creators have been open about the fact that the website is fake in the FAQ section. Despite this, Acopian has received many applications from people asking to be included on the site.
While some have found it amusing, others are concerned that people are being treated merely as goods.
Acopian has previously challenged traditional dating methods. A few weeks ago, she published a self-made ad on Twitter and Instagram, which said she was looking for love.
“I was like, why are we not using these extended networks for dating?… I wanted to make people realise the funny and weird blurred line between private and public forums,” she said.
The website is in no way associated with the multinational tech conglomerate and an official spokesperson refused to comment on the matter.
