X to Send DMs for Community Notes Updates
X is introducing a new notification method for its Community Notes fact-checking feature. Users will receive a direct message (DM) when a post they have interacted with receives a correction or note.
The change was announced by Elon Musk. The goal is to increase awareness of updates to posts that users have liked, replied to, or shared. Previously, X has sent in-app notifications for this purpose since 2023. It remains unclear whether the new DM-based system will replace or supplement the existing notifications.
Community Notes allows users to add context or corrections to potentially misleading posts. The system relies on contributors from varied perspectives agreeing on a note before it appears. This approach aims to reduce political bias but has drawn criticism for limiting the display of notes on controversial topics.
Analyses have shown that only a small percentage of submitted notes are ultimately shown to users. A Bloomberg review from last year found fewer than 10% of notes are displayed, while the Center for Countering Digital Hate reported that many accurate proposed notes never reach audiences. The new DM notification could help users become more aware of corrections on content they previously engaged with.
The feature is part of ongoing adjustments to Community Notes as the platform continues to refine its approach to misinformation and user trust. No specific rollout date was provided in the announcement, but like many X updates, it’s assumed that the new DMs will start appearing very soon after this announcement.
