Using App Annie and World Hot Apps, the Mail & Guardian came up with their list of top dating apps in the continent.
Of the 20% of Africans who are online, 70% are browsing the internet from their mobile phones.
According to MobiThinking Africa, the top mobile-only activities are related to apps, with 55% downloading games, 54% downloading music and 52% social networking.
Among these are apps which address some essential needs of Africans.
They include M-pesa, a money transfer app in Kenya, farming advice app KUZA Doctor and M-health, which gives healthcare info and connects patients to qualified doctors.
App Annie also shows that dating apps are also popular in the continent.
Half of the African countries had a dating app in their Top 100, and Grindr came out as the top dating app for the whole continent.
