Instagram to Cap Hashtags at Five Per Post

Instagram is rolling out a new limit on hashtag usage, restricting posts and Reels to a maximum of five hashtags per caption. The change follows more than a year of testing and reflects the platform’s ongoing effort to curb spam while adapting to shifts in how users discover content.

The update will be applied gradually across Instagram, according to the company. In a statement explaining the change, Instagram said: “Instagram will gradually update the number of hashtags that you can include in a caption for a reel or post to five. We find that using fewer (up to 5) more targeted hashtags, rather than many generic ones, can improve both your content’s performance and people’s experience on Instagram.”

Hashtags were once a central driver of visibility on Instagram, helping users browse content chronologically by topic. Over time, however, Meta has emphasized that algorithmic recommendations now play a much larger role in determining what users see. Instagram has repeatedly stated that hashtags no longer have a significant impact on reach, serving instead as a way to provide contextual signals about a post’s subject matter.

The five-hashtag cap formalizes experiments that have been running intermittently since 2024, when some creators reported being limited to as few as three hashtags per post. By standardizing the limit, Instagram aims to discourage excessive or irrelevant tagging – and may be aiming to give the alrogithm and it’s AI far more weight in how content is shared and discovered.
