Reddit Tests Video and Audio Formats for Popular Posts
Reddit is developing a new video-focused experience that would let users watch platform content and listen to posts in the background. CEO Steve Huffman discussed the work during the company’s second-quarter earnings call on July 31.
Huffman noted that Reddit stories already circulate widely on other platforms. On TikTok, for example, posts tagged #reddit total about 19.6 million, while those tagged #redditstories number around 9.9 million. Many of these videos pair text-to-speech narration of Reddit posts with unrelated background footage such as gameplay or cooking clips. Huffman described an emerging format of podcast-style content in which people read Reddit material aloud and said a listened-to or spoken version of Reddit could prove engaging as a distinct format.
The company has not detailed how the new video experience will appear inside the main Reddit app. Huffman indicated that a version would be available for testing later this year.
The initiative aligns with a wider industry trend of incorporating short-form or full-screen video. Facebook plans to test a reimagined experience later this year that opens the app directly into full-screen video for a subset of users. Streaming services including Netflix, Disney+, Peacock, and HBO Max have added TikTok-style short video feeds in recent months. Amazon offers a short video feed for shopping inspiration, and LinkedIn has introduced its own short video option.

The company said these video comments already account for more than 10 percent of its video posts.
