Tinder Collaborates with Area to Champion Reproductive Rights at NYFW
Tinder’s recent partnership with the fashion brand Area has highlighted a unique intersection of social advocacy and fashion at New York Fashion Week (NYFW). This collaboration, unveiled on September 6, 2024, introduced the “Bans Off Our Bodies” t-shirt paired with a substantial $25,000 donation to Planned Parenthood.
The launch coincided with Area’s Fall/Winter 2024 runway show, which celebrated the brand’s 10th anniversary. The collection featured a bold aesthetic with oversized captain’s hats, distinct blazers, and garments adorned with handprints. Among these striking pieces was the “Bans Off Our Bodies” shirt, prominently displaying Tinder’s logo alongside a graphic of red handprints.
Melissa Hobley, Tinder’s Chief Marketing Officer, expressed her enthusiasm about the partnership in an interview with Teen Vogue. She described the collaboration as “kismet,” highlighting how Area’s collection, focused on identity and inclusivity, aligned seamlessly with Tinder’s advocacy goals. Hobley emphasized Tinder’s commitment to reproductive freedom, noting that this partnership marks a more vocal stance on the issue than ever before.
Hobley explained that Area’s values on identity, inclusivity, and reducing stigma resonated strongly with Tinder’s mission. The collaboration also extended to the NYFW front row, where activists from Planned Parenthood were invited, underscoring the seriousness of the advocacy effort.
While this collaboration is bound to be controversial, Tinder has shown support for pro-choice sentiments as early as 2022, if not earlier. Advocacy aside, this collaboration is bound to draw a lot more eyes to the platform – and more user engagement along with it.
