FROM THE WEB: ‘Why millions of Muslims are signing up for online dating’ BBC

muslim

The BBC have just published an article about the rise of Muslim dating.

Western Muslims are increasingly looking for online ways to find a partner for life, rather than the more traditional screening processes associated with arranged marriages.

Lydia Green from BBC Arabic speaks to Adeem Younis, who owns SingleMuslim.com, which he founded while an undergraduate in Wakefield, and now claims over 1m members.

There are other sites like ishqr.com – previously called HipsterShaadi.com – and Muslimmatrimony.com

One man, Muhammad speaks about meeting his wife on a matchmaking site, saying:

“There isn’t that scope to meet people. Devout Muslims don’t go pubbing and clubbing. In typical Western cultures that’s OK, but in Muslim culture it’s frowned upon. So there are very few avenues, apart from family contact, for matchmaking to occur.”
