According to an analysis of over 1,000 users of the AI companion Replika, primarily males over 35, these AI companions have often replaced human relationships. Some users have even married their AI partners in virtual ceremonies.

The appeal of AI companions like Replika may increase among adolescents and emerging adults, particularly those who are single, socially underskilled, and frustrated with traditional dating apps. AI-driven chatbots, with personalities shaped by user interactions, could provide companionship for those feeling isolated.

In response to the growing market of users turning to AI in place of real partners, major dating apps are also integrating AI to address user dissatisfaction or common dating roadblocks. Bumble has introduced an AI-powered concierge service, akin to Volar’s approach, which uses chatbots to facilitate initial conversations with potential matches. Additionally, third-party AI tools such as “YourMove AI” are emerging to generate witty responses for dating app conversations.

Despite these innovations, concerns remain about the authenticity of AI-driven interactions. Many skeptical users feel that they do little to develop genuine social skills or foster meaningful connections, and that using AI to create your messages raises ethical concerns. Some users on the receiving end of these AI-generated opening messages feel that they’re disingenuous, and don’t properly represent the person on the other side of their screen.
