Bumble Survey Highlights LGBTQ+ Preferences in Online Dating
Bumble, in collaboration with Pride PH, recently conducted a survey of over 400 LGBTQ+ singles in the Philippines.
Online dating platforms have become increasingly important for LGBTQ+ Filipinos, with nearly 90% of respondents having used or currently using such platforms. Many found that these platforms allow for clearer and more confident self-expression, and offer the convenience of communicating at their own pace.
The survey reveals that nearly half (48%) of LGBTQ+ respondents feel pressured to conform to certain physical or personality ideals within their community. Additionally, 28% reported feeling the need to alter or conceal their gender expression to gain acceptance.
Despite these challenges, an overwhelming 85% emphasized the importance of finding partners who accept them as they are, without pressuring them to change.
While physical attractiveness is often emphasized in dating, only 32% of respondents prioritized it. Instead, good communication skills (52%), respect for boundaries (50%), and empathy (49%) were valued more highly within the queer dating scene.
Safety remains a top priority, with 56% of respondents considering safety features as the most important criterion when choosing a dating app. To address this, Bumble has implemented advanced safety tools to protect users from fake profiles and scams.
While this research was conducted on users in the Philippines, it likely emulates similar feelings among queer groups across the world. Bumble is just one of many platforms that have recently explored braoder LGBTQ+ sentiments on the challenges of modern dating.
