Facebook Dating Rolls Out Age Verification

After the successful launch of age verification tools for Instagram, Facebook Dating is the next Meta platform to adopt the technology. This feature will help ensure only those above 18 years of age can access the online dating service.

Meta’s own age detection tools will flag up instances where a user’s stated age and suspected age are potentially different. Users can then either upload an ID document, or undergo analysis by Yoti’s facial age estimation technology.

Facebook Dating will be the first online dating platform to use Yoti’s facial age estimation technology in the US to verify the age of users.

Instagram has been leading the charge, as shown by new stats released today. Age assurance tech stopped 96% of teenagers who tried to state their age as 18, demonstrating “the clear role effective age assurance has in protecting young people”, Meta shared.

Julie Dawson, Yoti Chief Policy & Regulatory Officer said, “Enabling young people to thrive and be safe online is of the utmost importance. So, we’re delighted to continue our work with Meta to create age appropriate experiences, this time on Facebook Dating. Daters can have greater confidence in who they are meeting online, and most importantly, young people will be better protected from accessing inappropriate content and experiences.”

Erica Finkle, Meta Director of Data Governance said, “Our age assurance tests show that our tools are working to help keep young people within age-appropriate experiences, and we’re proud to partner with Yoti to provide people with simple to use options that respect their privacy.”
