Senior Dating Suffers Major Data Breach, Shuts Down Site

A significant data breach has compromised the personal information of 765,517 users on the dating platform Senior Dating, raising critical concerns about data security in online matchmaking services.

The breach, which occurred on November 23, 2024, was tied to an exposed Firebase database and came to light on December 9 after being listed in the Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) database. The incident also impacted Ladies.com, a site run by the same operator. In response, both platforms were shut down.

Exposed information includes a wide array of sensitive user data: email addresses, profile photos, birthdates, geographic locations, Facebook account links, and lifestyle details like smoking and drinking habits. Experts warn that such information could be exploited for identity theft, fraud, and targeted phishing scams – things that many tech-illiterate seniors are already commonly targeted with.

As of writing this, Senior Dating’s website is still shut down, and the app is no longer available on Google Play. This sudden closure could have impacted hundreds of thousands of users, and so far it isn’t clear when the platform will be returning – if at all. If it does, it will hopefully have stronger security measures in place to prevent a second breach, and could serve as a warning sign to similar platforms that are just as vulnerable to sudden major breaches.
