Twitter and Pinterest Co-Founders Unveil Tangle

Silicon Valley pioneers Biz Stone, co-founder of Twitter (now X), and Evan Sharp, co-founder of Pinterest, have introduced Tangle, a new social networking application developed through their startup West Co. The app, which launched in an invite-only alpha phase in November 2025, positions itself as an alternative to conventional social media by emphasizing purposeful daily engagement over passive consumption.

West Co, established in 2023 and based in San Francisco, has secured $29 million in seed funding, led by Spark Capital – an investor with prior involvement in Twitter’s early rounds. This financial backing supports the company’s stated mission to create tools that encourage people to live life more deliberately. Tangle operates on a core daily prompt sent via notification: “What’s your intention for today?”

Users share these personal goals or reflections with a select group of friends, who can provide support and later engage in mutual reflection on outcomes. The design deliberately avoids traditional engagement drivers like algorithmic feeds, likes, or viral content, instead prioritizing small, trusted networks and accountability for personal growth. The initiative stems from the founders’ reflections on the broader consequences of their past work in social platforms, namely the disruptions caused by social media.

Tangle joins a wave of emerging digital tools addressing social media fatigue, mental health concerns, and addictive design patterns. Similar sentiments appear in projects by other tech figures, such as former Apple designer Jony Ive’s explorations into AI devices as countermeasures to smartphone side effects. The app’s team includes alumni from Twitter and Pinterest, alongside unique roles focused on ethical AI guidance.
