Instagram to Introduce Paid Access for Advanced AI Features

Instagram is moving toward a subscription model for certain artificial intelligence tools as Meta seeks to manage the high costs of running generative AI models.

In a weekly Q&A session on Instagram Stories, Instagram head Adam Mosseri confirmed that users will eventually need to pay for expanded access to in-app AI features. The company has already implemented daily limits on the use of advanced generative tools powered by its Muse image model. When users reach these limits, they are prompted to subscribe to continue using the features.

Mosseri explained that AI models are expensive to operate, forcing the platform to either restrict usage or introduce paid options. The company is working on subscription packages that would remove or increase these limits.

This development aligns with Meta’s broader strategy to monetize its AI investments. The company has introduced Instagram Plus, though it does not yet specifically bundle AI features. Separately, Meta’s One subscription package provides unlimited access to Conversation Focus for Meta AI glasses users, while non-paying users are limited to three hours per month.

The shift reflects the significant computational resources required to run large language and image generation models at scale. Meta has invested billions of dollars in AI development, and passing some costs to users is seen as a necessary step to sustain these efforts.

Mosseri has indicated a preference for keeping features free where possible but acknowledged that server costs eventually require either throttling or paid access.
