X Releases Rebuilt Android App After Year of Development

X has rolled out a completely rebuilt version of its Android app, aiming to address long-standing performance issues and improve the user experience on the platform.

The update was developed from the ground up rather than as a simple revision of the existing application. X head of product Nikita Bier described the project as one of the largest engineering efforts in the company’s history. The new app promises faster loading, smoother scrolling, better notifications, and improved overall reliability.

The rebuild effort began nearly a year ago, with the company assembling a dedicated Android team. Bier noted that the platform had experienced one of its strongest periods for Android downloads in October of the previous year, underscoring the importance of addressing platform-specific problems.

The previous Android version had faced criticism for poor performance, including difficulties loading posts from links. These issues were particularly pronounced in global markets where Android devices dominate smartphone usage. The new app is expected to help attract or retain users in these regions.

Bier acknowledged that some features are still missing or under development. Support for Spaces (X’s live audio rooms), the new video editor, react-with-video functionality, cashtags, and custom timelines will be added in upcoming updates. Performance on older Android devices is also being optimized.
