Hinge Releases Phonebook to Encourage IRL Connections

To mark the Global Day of Unplugging, Hinge is helping Gen Z to create connections away from their phone with a new Phonebook. The pocket-sized document is filled with ideas and suggestions for how young people can connect in-person.

From February 21st 2024, young adults across the U.S. can order a free Phonebook (2,000 copies available), or download a digital version. In late February, an in-app message will be sent to Hinge members to encourage them to enjoy experiences away from their phone.

Additionally, the dating app has donated $100,000 to Global Day of Unplugging. These funds will go towards creating 100 unplugged experiences focused on Gen Z across the U.S. This campaign is the latest part of Hinge’s $1 million One More Hour social impact initiative.

“We live so much of our lives online that unplugging can feel drastic or scary, but Global Day of Unplugging isn’t about shaming anyone for their screen time. It’s about showing people that tapping into the magic of IRL is way easier than it seems,” says Josh Penny, Hinge’s Social Impact Director.

“Our physical Phonebook supports young adults who may be wondering ‘Okay, I unplugged. Now what?’”, he shares.

Designed to be easily carried around, the Phonebook “features pages of creative and reflective activities that young adults need to unplug and focus on their time with others”, Hinge shared. The book was put together by the dating app, in partnership with 19 well-known collaborators.

In a national survey of 2,500 18-25 year olds, Hinge found that 75% of Gen Zers agree spending time with others in-person makes them feel less lonely.
