Threads Tests AI Summaries For User Interaction History

Meta’s social app Threads is experimenting with a new feature designed to use artificial intelligence to summarize interactions between users directly on profile pages. The test, discovered by app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi, involves AI-generated summaries that appear as an overlay when viewing a profile, offering a brief snapshot of prior conversations and shared topics of interest between two accounts.

The summaries reportedly function in a similar way to email recap tools: instead of scrolling through multiple posts or comment threads, users would see a condensed overview of how they’ve previously engaged with a particular person. The feature could also evolve to generate a broader profile description, summarizing the themes, interests, and posting habits of any account – even if there has been no direct interaction.

While Meta has not confirmed timelines or plans for full deployment, the test signals Threads’ increasing focus on integrating generative AI across its products. The move also aligns with competitive developments elsewhere. X already offers Premium subscribers an AI-powered “More about this account” option generated by its Grok chatbot, which provides quick summaries to help users decide whether an account is worth following. Threads appears to be pursuing a similar direction, likely leveraging Meta’s expanding AI infrastructure unveiled earlier in the year across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

If rolled out widely, the summaries could simplify profile discovery and potentially encourage engagement by reducing friction in understanding who someone is and what they talk about. At the same time, some observers have noted that condensed AI profiles could lessen organic exploration, replacing the process of browsing posts with abbreviated talking points that may not fully reflect a user’s activity or personality — particularly for less active accounts.
